3. Sew a green fabric 1 rectangle 1½˝ × 3½˝ to 1 side of each of 4 gray 3½˝ × 3½˝ squares.

4. Sew the units from Step 3 to 2 gray 3½˝ × 4½˝ rectangles.

5. Sew the units from Steps 2 and 4 together and press in the direction of the arrows.

Piecing the Border Blocks

Each round of borders has 2 sections, A and B, which contain 2 units of equal size, for a total of 4.

Making Border 1

NOTE: All odd-numbered borders are the narrower colored borders.

Group A: Sew a green fabric 2 outer “arm” 1½˝ × 3½˝ onto each short side of a green fabric 1 center 1½˝ × 6½˝. Press the seams toward the outer arms. Make 2.

Group B: Sew a green fabric 2 outer arm 1½˝ × 4½˝ onto each short side of a green fabric 1 center 1½˝ × 6½˝. Press the seams toward the outer arms. Make 2.
